Where gas and bloating come from

When fibres and some carbohydrates reach the colon undigested, gut bacteria ferment them and produce gas. This is normal and healthy, but the speed matters. Rapidly fermented fibres such as inulin, and some sugars in beans, onions and garlic, release a lot of gas quickly. That is what you feel as bloating.

Why gum arabic is different

Hashab gum arabic is a large, highly branched soluble fibre that ferments slowly along the length of the colon. In a study of healthy volunteers, 10 g per day was well tolerated and had a stronger effect on beneficial bacteria than the same amount of inulin.

Can gum arabic cause bloating?

Some people notice mild gas in the first days while gut bacteria adapt. This is usually temporary. The most common mistake is starting with a large dose.

7 tips to reduce bloating and gas

  1. Start with half a sachet and increase over a week.
  2. Drink enough water through the day.
  3. Dissolve the powder fully before drinking.
  4. Eat slowly and chew well to swallow less air.
  5. Cut down on fizzy drinks and chewing gum.
  6. Notice your personal trigger foods, such as beans, onion, garlic and cabbage.
  7. Take a short walk after meals.

See a doctor promptly if you have blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, fever, severe or persistent pain, diarrhoea that wakes you at night, or new bowel symptoms after age 50. These are not typical IBS symptoms and need medical assessment.
