What Is Gum Arabic? Types, Uses and Benefits Explained
A clear guide to gum arabic (acacia gum): where it comes from, the difference between Hashab (Acacia senegal) and Talha (Acacia seyal), how it is used, and why it is valued as a natural prebiotic fibre.

Gum arabic in one sentence
Gum arabic, also called acacia gum or food additive E414, is the natural dried sap of certain acacia trees. It is collected by hand as amber-coloured "tears", cleaned, and ground into a fine powder that dissolves easily in water.
Where does gum arabic come from?
Most of the world's gum arabic comes from the "gum belt" of Africa's Sahel region, with Sudan as the best-known source. Two species dominate the trade:
- Hashab – Acacia senegal: the premium grade. Light in colour, mild in taste, very soluble, and the grade traditionally preferred for food and nutritional use.
- Talha – Acacia seyal: darker and more brittle, widely used in industrial applications.

What is gum arabic used for?
- Food and drinks: a natural emulsifier and stabiliser in soft drinks, confectionery and flavour emulsions.
- Nutrition: a source of soluble dietary fibre with prebiotic properties.
- Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics: as a binder and coating agent.
- Arts and printing: in inks, watercolours and lithography.
Why is gum arabic called a prebiotic?
Gum arabic is rich in soluble fibre that is not digested in the stomach or small intestine. It reaches the colon, where it is fermented slowly by beneficial bacteria. In a controlled study with healthy volunteers, about 10 g of gum arabic per day for four weeks significantly increased bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. We explain the evidence in Gum arabic benefits for gut health.
